Get Help to Deal With Past and Present Trauma

We specialize in eye movement integration in Warwick, RI. EMDR™ is a technique developed by Francine Schapiro, Ph.D., that has been employed to neutralize past and present trauma. The traumas may originate from a single incident or repeated episodes over extended periods.

In addition to the more blatant experiences such as assault, accidents or injuries, episodes of loss or trauma, there are experiences of ongoing emotional abuse or neglect, which the person may not remember clearly or at all in adulthood.

EMDR treatments involve having a person visualize or represent in some other way some aspects or examples of the experience. The person is invited to think of a current negative thought or belief and emotion as they experience the negative events, intensity, and location in the body.

Then they are asked to identify and rate the strength of a positive belief about themselves. From here, the person is invited to engage in repeated eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation until the problem intensity is neutralized.

Eye Movement Integration Therapy for Trauma Release

EMI™ or eye movement integration has some similarities and some differences from EMDR. The eye movement is somewhat slower, and the pattern of movement may change during any single sequence. The person is invited to think of a problem issue and watch it as a movie.

While watching, they are asked to consider a positive thought about themselves, which is running across the bottom of the movie as a subscript. These varied eye movements are undertaken for up to 15 repetitions per sequence, and the sequences are repeated until the problem issue diminishes.
